WHAT ARE TEAHOUSES?

Tea houses are the places where trekkers like you stay for a meal and a restful sleep during your journey on the way to the base camp.

They are called Teahouses, not just like that.

There's a story behind that name.

During the initial days of trekking in Nepal when the guests were tired they asked the guide to stop for the rest.

In response, the guide said “Up ahead there is a Tea house where you'll rest.”

That's how Teahouses came into existence.

In short: Teahouses used to be a place where trekkers would take a rest after a tiring hike. But now, it's much more than that.

It's a place where a lot of activities go on together side by side; hosting guests, taking and preparing their orders, organising campfires in the evening, and so on and so forth.

Interesting, isn't it?

A TYPICAL DAY IN TEAHOUSES

Trekking in the Himalayas is no less than magical.

In fact, many factors come into play to make it that way.

One of them is your stay in the Teahouses.

The moment you enter into them after completing your hike for the day, you'll be stunned by its ambience.

The ambience is phenomenal, given if you are an outgoing person. Yes, you read that right!

However, if you are solitude-seekers, you may not find it as comfortable as other relatively peaceful, silent, and less-crowded places.

But, don't worry! If you aren't used to such places, you may avoid it and spend time in one corner, seeing things from a distance.

Or, you can entirely choose off-the-beaten trekking destinations that are less-crowded and more silent.

This way, you'll have fun as well as you can be on your own.

But wait, there's more:

What's even more fascinating is sipping ginger tea sitting beside crackling fire in a shivering cold together with others.

Yes, we mean it!

The experience is so amazing that you'll feel the surge of positive energy, instilling in you a deep sense of fulfilment.

Not only that, engaging in playful banters and bursting into laughter has its own place during such times.

In the end, you'll find yourself in a good mood with an enhanced feeling of well-being in these Teahouses.

WHAT AMENITIES DO THESE TEAHOUSES OFFER?

Look, Tea Houses are traditional places with rustic appearance.

They aren't as grand and lavish as other hotels in the towns or cities.

But, this doesn't mean they're unapproachable. Or, unliveable. Of course, you can.

The only thing that differentiate these Teahouses from other grand hotels is lack of luxury and amenities.

That's how things are up there in the mountains.

Here's the thing:

The Teahouses have limited rooms. Each room has a double bed which you'll be sharing on a twin basis or with your friends.

Though there are two beds, the rooms are quite congested.

You’ll have a very limited space for moving around.

No matter how limited space you've for moving around, they're well-kept and ensure sound sleep.

What more do you need than this up there in the Himalayas to make your journey comfortable?

Oh, and yes, not all the Tea Houses have western-style toilets or commods.

Some of them have and some of them don't.

So, you may have to learn to get used to squatting toilets or sitting toilets.

We're not through yet:

When you're tired after long hours of hiking, these Teahouses serve you the foods of your desire.

But, don't fret, the food they serve is well-cooked, maintaining hygiene-protocols in mind so that you won't fall sick.

Here's the list of cuisine they serve:

NOTE: If you've to kick-off on the journey, tomorrow, in the early morning, and have a specific breakfast order, communicate it with the Teahouse-owner so that they can deliver your order on time.

But the catch here's:

The rooms don't have air conditioning or room-heaters.

As a result of this the rooms are damn cold.

In fact, the rooms are so cold that you may even want an extra blanket in the upper Khumbu region to keep yourself warm. Yes, we mean it.

That's why we want you to carry 700 to 900 fills sleeping-bag as it keeps you warm even on chilly nights.

With that level of preparation, there's nothing for you to worry about on the trip. You're all set.

Likewise, there are some of the services which are very much urgent for you but won't get them free of cost in the Teahouses. You've to pay for them.

Only upon payment, you can either charge your phone, camera, or other electronic gadgets.

Even when you want to take a hot shower or fill your water bottle with hot water, be ready to burn some cash.

Why?

Because to manage all these things up there in the mountain the Teahouse's owners have to spend a good amount of money.

They have to hire either porters or yaks to transport goods and commodities to those places.

All these operations costs add up, making services quite expensive there in the Himalayas.

Regardless of all these, the hard work Sherpa’s put into their work makes trekking possible for all of us.

Their commitment to keep things going despite hardships has made our stay in those Teahouses an unforgettable memory.

HOW WELL-MAINTAINED THESE TEAHOUSES ARE?

As said earlier, Teahouses aren't as elegant as big hotels out there in the town.

Yet, they're maintained in a way you can have restful nights and hygienic hearty meals.

In other words: Cleanliness isn't a matter.

The rooms are mopped. The bed sheets and curtains are washed. The washrooms are flushed. And the surroundings undergo regular cleaning.

All these eventually help make these places well-maintained.

I assure you, you won't cringe with disgust when you enter the room.

LET'S WRAP THIS UP

Teahouses are simple traditional places with warm hospitality and lively ambience.

Run and regulated by a family, these places often make you feel you're safe and at home.

They'll also remind you of the fact that simplicity, unlike sophistication, ensures a deep sense of peace.

So, are you ready to make your stay in the Teahouses memorable?

Saying this much, it's time to take a leave.

That's it for today guys!
