Factors making the Everest Base Camp Trek difficult.

The Himalayan Range has it's own history of creation.

When two tectonic plates collided with each other millions and millions of years ago, the Himalayas were created.

These Himalayas are raw, rugged, and steep with distinct climate and temperature.

These Himalayas aren't for faint hearted as they require Herculean strength and bull-dog determination to achieve it.

Now, the question is, what makes the Everest Base Camp Trek difficult?

Here's the answer:

  1. High-altitude: If there is anything that makes this trek more difficult, it's high-elevation.

Wondering how?

The more you gain the elevation, the thinner the oxygen level gets. The thinner the oxygen level gets, the more your body works for its compensation. The more your body works, the more internal pressure is created, eventually making the trip strenuous.

Most of the time you’ll be hiking between 2,840 m to 5,555 m.

Now, you can imagine the level of effort you’ve to put into to make it to the base camp.

That’s why it’s alway urgent for you to acclimatize when you are trekking at high-altitude,

 

Intermittent acclimatization will allow your body to cope with the changed air pressure, making your trip at high-altitude more achievable.

  1. Geographical Complexities: Raw, rugged, and steep trails are uneven. There are many steep ascents and descents on the way. 

And guess what guys?

Walking uphills and downhills sometimes can be taxing. It costs a lot of effort. You need to gird your loin to make it to the base camp.

But this doesn't mean it's unachievable. It is.

Only thing is, your body is squeezed to the extent that you feel intense cramps and pains.

However, if you have prepared enough, it won’t be as hard as I claimed it to be.

  1. Climatic Condition: What kind of climatic conditions are you used to? 

Are you used to hot and humid conditions? Or from cold regions?

Let me put this in simple words:

If you are from a hot and humid region, this adds to your woes. Because it’s cold in this region.

It increases your struggle to adapt to the situation, making it more difficult for you.

However, if you have carried necessary gear like Down Jackets, woolen hat, warm inner wears and socks, you've no reason to worry.

But if you are from a cold region, it won’t be much of a problem because you can adapt to it. 

Yet this doesn’t mean a person from a hot region can’t do it. They can! And all they have to do is choose a suitable time for the event.

  1. Daily Weather: Weather keeps changing. And, to your amazement, you won’t know what weather you will have an hour later. 

One moment it’s cold. The other, it’s foggy. And the other, its scorching Sun out there in the sky.

That unpredictable weather is at higher altitudes! And, this makes the journey a little bit harder yet reachable.

  1. Trails: The routes that you prefer to reach your destination also make it a bit tougher.

And the reason is:

The trails are steep, raw, and rugged. At times, you need to pass through very high, steep, and narrow sections of the trails. 

And, if you are scared of heights or can’t walk long distances it can be a little problem. In such sections, be cautious. Or else, you may not achieve what you've set out for.

  1. Your physical Preparations: How well have you prepared yourself to make it to the base camp? 

Is your physical stamina intact enough to bear the pressure of the journey?

These are some genuine questions to ponder over before the trek. Because they help you figure out what you've to do to make you journey more transformational.

So, here’s the bottom line:

Prepare, at least, 4 to 5 months ahead of time. And this develops in you both resilience plus stamina to make it up to the Everest Base Camp.

  1. Trekker's Physical Fitness: No matter how hard you prepare, if you are not fit, you may have problems trekking.

Here’s what I mean:

Certain physical conditions prevent you from going on the long-days trek.

Example:

A person with Heart-complication has difficulty trekking. So is with the person having respiratory problems. And many such physical conditions act as an obstacle in your pursuit.

But guess what?

How difficult is Everest Base Camp Trek?

In comparison to other treks in Nepal, the Everest Base Camp Trek is Difficult. Out of 10, I would like to give 6.5 for its difficulty level.

Yet again, I would like to say, the concept of difficulty is subjective.

While saying this I don’t mean to say it’s super hard. 

Trust me, it’s not! And, not that easy either if you haven’t prepared enough.

And that begs the obvious question:

Can someone who doesn't have much trekking experience do the EBC Trek?

Short answer:

They can. And, now, you can too!

All you need to do is…. do yourself a little favor….

You have to prepare for it. You've to train yourself.

Is Everest Base Camp Trek for Beginners?

It depends. If you are the kind of person who works out every day, this is for you.

Let me explain this:

If you jog, do squats, push-ups, and other strength-building exercises, you can attempt it in the first go. Or else, you know what happens, don’t you?

So, if you are thinking about doing the EBC Trek in the first go, make sure you prepare yourself to the core.

For your kind information, you should prepare at least 4 to 5 months ahead of the main event.

And the cool part:

This stretches your muscles, bones, and back and sets you ready for the trek. You evolve stronger than ever.

How can you prepare for the difficult Everest Base Camp Trek?

Preparation makes things easier. And preparing ahead of time makes your trekking less difficult and more joyful. Everyone who wishes to attempt should prepare for it.
